Nach ihrer Rückkehr nach Mauretanien beschloss sie voller Hoffnung auf ein neues Leben, das Beste aus ihrer Behinderung zu machen und begann mit der Leichtathletik.
Obwohl es in Mauretanien keine staatlich organisierten Sportmöglichkeiten gibt, konnte Fatimetou einen Trainer finden und jeden Tag in einem ehemaligen Kinder- und Jugendhaus trainieren.
