It is again the words of the Homily pronounced by His Holiness John Paul II that underline the primary importance of the Sistine Chapel in the life of the Church :
"The Sistine Chapel is the place that, for each Pope, holds the memory of a special day in his life. … Precisely here, in this sacred space, the Cardinals gather, awaiting the manifestation of the will of Christ with regard to the person of the Successor of St Peter ….

mv.vatican.vaThe earliest mention of the St Jerome dates in fact to the beginning of the 19th century, when it is attributed to Leonardo, in the will of the Swiss painter Angelica Kauffmann.
On Kauffmann s death all trace of it again disappeared, until it was found by chance and purchased by Napoleon s uncle, Cardinal Joseph Fesch.

mv.vatican.vaSalm accompanied his second Glockner expedition in 1800 as far up as the Eagle ’ s Rest, his vicar-general Count Sigmund von Hohenwart ( later the first bishop of Linz ) overcame in 1802 his openly admitted fear of the airy notch between the Kleinglockner and the Grossglockner, and at the age of 57 achieved the hotly covered peak victory.
The next generation of mountaineering clerics was led by the Salzburg Cardinal Prince Friedrich Schwarzenberg, who studied theology at Salzburg and had undertaken several first ascent in the Limestone Alps.
Schwarzenberg later served as the Archbishop of Prague.

Die nächste Generation bergsteigender Kleriker führt der Salzburger Kardinal Friedrich Fürst Schwarzenberg an, der in Salzburg Theologie studiert und einige Erstbesteigungen in den Kalkalpen unternommen hatte.
Schwarzenberg wirkte später als Erzbischof von Prag.

Also noteworthy are the nine ceremonial berlins which belonged to Pontiffs or Princes of the Holy Roman Church, such as Cardinal Luciano Luigi Bonaparte, who received the carriage as a gift from his cousin Napoleon III, Emperor of France.
Aside from the aforementioned " protocol " carriages, two historical travelling berlin carriages are displayed: one used by Pope Pius IX in his re-entry from exile after the revolts of the Roman Republic, and ther other for the last trip of a " Pope King " in the papal territories of Romagna.
