The marmot is another well-known mountain dweller.

It is part of the rodent family and lives in social family groups consisting of up to 20 animals in underground burrows above the timberline.

Faced with a scarcity of food in the harsh winters, the marmot has solved the problem by going into hibernation and surviving on the fat reserves it accumulates over the summer months.

Since the Dandie was originally bred as an earth dog, to retrieve animals such as badgers, wildcats and other vermins from their underground burrows, the breed needed a strong characteristic of courage and fearlessness, which it has managed to retain today.

The Dandie is often called " the philosopher " because with everything he does he obviously asks himself:

The works in the exhibition – drawings, photographs, videos, sculptures, objects, and accessible installations – allow the theme to be experienced with immediacy.

Among the numerous literary interpretations of this motif, Franz Kafka’s unfinished story "The Burrow" (1923-24) is accorded special prominence in the exhibition.

From the perspective of an animal, Kafka describes how a subterranean system of corridors reminiscent of a maximumsecurity unit is fashioned with agonizing perfectionism.

The burrow is simultaneously a safe haven and a space of threat.

Published for the first time as an independent volume in collaboration with S. FISCHER Verlag and illustrated with drawings by Roni Horn, this story accompanies viewers through the exhibition.
