When asked by the reporter about the water discoloration in Santorini he answered that this is normal for volcanoes due to fluid emissions from the bottom of the caldera ( which happen all the time ).

In his concluding remarks he said that in contrast with earthquakes, volcanoes provide ample warnings before an eruption, that scientists are monitoring the volcano and that they are not worried at all.

At the same time, the Obama administration is focusing greater attention on isolating and encircling China.

The eruption of American imperialism is leading inexorably in the direction of a global conflagration, involving all the major powers, which will raise the danger of nuclear annihilation.

The space has to afford an optimal distance between differences, small enough for mutual knowledge, for dispelling myths, but big enough for comfort.

It has to be strong enough to prevent implosion, an eruption of differences into rape, silencing or annihilation.

But it also has to be flexible enough to permit differences to change their form and significance. ”

Volcanic ash is the major product of volcanic activity.

On average, volcanic eruptions inject more than a million cubic meters of ash into the atmosphere every month – and large eruptions can produce that amount within hours.

The consequences of the release of large amounts of ash were brought home to us by the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull in 2010.

Here is a detailed description of the last eruption of Santorini, which was in 1950.

By no means this should be taken as a prediction of the next eruption, which might or might not be close (months to years from now), but it is a scenario of a typical small-scale eruption that would represent a highly interesting attraction rather than devastation to Santorini.

Summit topography is complicated by the shifting of craters from NW to SE.

Frequent 19th and 20th century eruptions were dominated by small-to-moderate explosions from the summit crater, with occasional lava flows and larger explosive eruptions accompanied by pyroclastic flows that have reached the lower flanks of the volcano.

During 17-19 January, we managed to stay on top of Lengai with a small group.

During much of the time, the summit was in clouds, but on 18 January, the afternoon proved to be clear and Lengai started a phase of ash eruptions lasting from around 4pm to 8pm.

A detailed report about the expedition and Lengai's acitivity in the time between 17 and 21 January can be found here.

Like many great things, glass was invented by accident.

Prehistoric man discovered it by sudden volcanic eruptions followed by rapid cooling, or by lightning strikes.

Around 4000 BC

In El Salvador, extreme natural events turn into disasters with greater frequency than just about anywhere else.

This small country is regularly hit by earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.

According to a study published by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( UNO-CHA ), 88.7 % of the total area of El Salvador is considered at-risk.

Stromboli, the island with the most volcanic activity.

Volcanic eruptions every hour are guaranteed and you can watch it at night from a boat.

However, the guided tours are pretty expensive.

www.ronny-pannasch.de

If you haven ´ t been there - don ´ t worry, you did not miss much.

We had also been tempted to visit Stromboli - the furthest island of the archipelago from Sicily where volcanic activity can be observed nearly once per hour with small volcanic eruptions, but that tour is quite expensive.

Our Tips

www.ronny-pannasch.de

The quadratic elements placed around the face of the Sungod Tonatiuh ( depicted with a knife-blade instead of a tongue ) in the center of the stone describe the annihilation of previous worlds by jaguars, tornados, volcanic eruptions and flooding rains.

When Hernán Cortés invaded the Aztecan Empire in 1519, the Aztecs assumed that they were living in the fifth and last age of the world as they knew it.

We will primarily focus on large events ( e.g., plate boundary earthquakes and associated tsunamis, sudden relative sea level rise, floods and storms ) in order to evaluate their impacts on the coastal zone and to develop adaptation strategies for coastal geohazards, based on the analyses of ongoing, recent, and past events.

Recent experience teaches mankind that oceanic geohazards, such as plate boundary earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, coastal and submarine landslides, and resulting tsunamis can reach dimensions that exceed the probable and the expected, as would be defined by conventional hazard and risk analysis.

This new class of threats (e.g. the 2011 Sendai event in Japan) results from a chain of superimposed disasters, and can produce an immediate impact on the intricately linked global community and economy.

www.futureocean.org

Since the age of enlightenment, the category of natural disasters had been looked at as the acceptance that no one, neither God nor man is responsible for floodings, volcanic eruptions or windstorms.

Since about 1990, however, there has been a turn of the 'informed opinion' on such events.

www.uni-bielefeld.de
