Der Kontinentale Schelf im Sinne des Seerechtsabkommens ist mindestens 200 Seemeilen breit, lässt sich aber unter bestimmten morphologischen und geologischen Bedingungen ( Artikel 76 des Seerechtsabkommens ) auf eine Breite von bis zu 350 Seemeilen oder mehr ausdehnen.
Ansprüche auf eine Ausweitung des Kontinentalen Schelfs über seine Standardbreite hinaus müssen den Bedingungen des Artikels 76 und den Empfehlungen einer speziell für diese Aufgabe eingesetzten UN-Kommission ( UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf ( CLCS ) ) genügen .
Entsprechende Ansprüche müssen von den Küstenstaaten spätestens zehn Jahre nach Ratifizierung des Abkommens geltend gemacht werden.
