Im vollentwickelten Organ sind das für die Reifung der T-Lymphozyten verantwortliche thymus-epitheliale Gewebe und die perivaskulären Räume zwar eng verflochten aber stets durch eine Lage flacher Epithelzellen mit Basallamina gegeneinander abgegrenzt, die Thymus-Blutschranke.
Das Anlagematerial für die nichtepithelialen Stromazellen ( Vorläufer der Makrophagen ) und die freien Zellen des Thymus ( präthymische Stammzellen der T-Lymphozyten ) kommen aus embryonalen Blutbildungszentren ( Leber, Milz, Knochenmark ).
