The dramaturgy of Tsintsadze ’s film is reminiscent of the early dramas of Harold Pinter, in which frequently a group of aggressive intruders also destroys a seemingly rigid regime until the placeholders fight back.

Yet to interpret the film as a “satirical parable” of petit bourgeois German xenophobia towards eastern immigrants, as some critics do, misses the mark entirely.

The underlying tone of the film is far too menacing for that, the brutal battles of the characters for their respective positions and claims to power are far too real.
