In Kapstadt traf Schmelen den deutschen Missionar Albrecht, der mit seinem Bruder 1805 Warmbad im Süden des Landes gegründet hatte.
Dieser erzählte, dass die Bewohner von Warmbad vor der Orlam-Gruppe von Jager Afrikaner flüchten mussten und sich in Pella, jenseits des Oranje niedergelassen hatten.
Dort begann Schmelen seine Arbeit, und zog mit den Nama und ihrem Vieh von Weideplatz zu Weideplatz.
