Ammonites The most common fossils of the Whitby Mudstone Formation are ammonites.
Especially well-preserved specimens occur in limestone concretions (left photograph), the ones in the claystone are flattened (right photograph).

Letztere Gattung ist übrigens nach der ersten Äbtissin der Whitby Abtei , der heiligen Hilda, benannt.
