The IAI accepts applications between February and May, and librarians are hired on October 1 and awarded temporary civil service status.
The program is divided into a practical year at the IAI library and a year of theoretical training at the Bayerische Bibliotheksschule (Bavarian Library School) in Munich.
It culminates in a Laufbahnprüfung, a professional exam for the German civil service.
